1. Proper Procedure

Not following the proper procedure or adopting best practices can lead to undesired outcomes. Here are some questions you can ask to avoid this situation:

Would you share some examples of your previous work? What kind of experience do you have on vehicles similar to mine? How long have you been in business for?

What are your thoughts on using primer and activator? The answer should be yes

Do you use a cold-knife or a spider tool? If they respond yes to cold-knife follow up with “how do you protect from body damage?”

Does the technician include cleaning as part of the service?

How do you prevent displacement of the windshield after install? Sagging occurs at varying rates depending on the angle on which your windshield stands.

If your vehicle has features such as heated windshield, humidity sensor, rain-sensors, heads-up display, or other types of driver-assist. It is important to ask if they are familiar with working on vehicles with these features. These features are nice to have but come at a cost.

2. Materials Matter

The quality of the materials and tools used will make a difference in the end result of the installation. Using poor quality adhesives or supplies can lead to improper installation and harm to people and property. Drive away times are also influenced by materials and environment. Lower quality adhesives tend to take longer to cure and dry. They may also not have the same adhesive strength.

Using low quality tools can lead to harm to the technician(s) and damage your vehicle.

Using a manual caulking tool is NOT recommended as it can create inconsistencies in the bead which leads to leaks or failure of the windshield. A powered caulking is recommended to help ensure a smooth and consistent bead.

Your auto glass technician should be familiar with the use of a cold-knife and a spider tool. These are tools used to remove the existing windshield and both come with different pros and cons.

3. Warranty

Warranty is important, nobody wants to pay to have their windshield fixed and end up with leaks and have to pay again. You also don’t want to have to pay AGAIN if there is a defect with the glass or recalibration is required. Ask about warranty:

What kind of warranty do you offer on parts & labour?

Labour should typically come with a life-time warranty provided you own the vehicle. Parts warranty would be limited to what the manufacturer provides.
